FEDPOLEL MUST WORK TOWARDS BECOMING POLYTECHNIC-UNIVERSITY- Prof. Akinterinwa

prof. Bola Akinterinwa

The former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of international affairs, Professor Bola Akinterinwa has tasked the management and staff of the Federal Polytechnic, Ileoluji on the need to work towards becoming a polytechnic-university.

Akinterinwa made this statement at the 4th foundation day lecture of the institution that held today, Wednesday 18th May at the polytechnic's twin auditorium.

The don noted that polytechnic education in Nigeria is not in any way inferior to university education, contrary to the widespread notion about it. While citing the instance of France and China whose tertiary education system runs mostly on polytechnics, he argued that polytechnic education, if given the right attention in Nigeria, will adequately stand in the gap of the infrastructural and technological deficit in our societies.

Citing an example of how the Massachusetts institute of technology (MIT), USA help provide adequate professional training to the aeronautical engineers in Massachusetts. He noted that the polytechnic in Ileoluji must strive to carve a niche for itself by identifying practical ways by which it can impact its immediate community.

He went further to advocate the need for the university approach in technical education. He noted that university education, although philosophical and theoretical, must find its place in the polytechnic, hence the Polytechnic-University hybrid concept.

While responding to questions after his lecture, the foreign affairs expert revealed that he and the polytechnic rector had met with the minister of National planning, Zainab Ahmed, to fashion out ways to achieve this. He specifically disclosed that their plan was to cooperate with the Chinese to set up a workshop-classroom model, in a way that is similar to what obtains in China polytechnics.

He further charged the institution and the community to ensure that they maintain a vibrant town-gown relationship. This was further reiterated by the proprietress of Aunty Dupe institutions, Chief Mrs. Modupe Ogunsusi, who charged the rector to actively collaborate with the Bola Tinubu skills acquisition centre in the town, as this will enable students at the centre to get certified by the polytechnic after getting the needed skills and as well serve as the showroom of the polytechnic in the town.

Akinterinwa delivered his lecture in his characteristic jocular manner and splashed it all over with his wealth of experience all over the world. His diplomatic adroitness came into play while responding to a question of how to attract enough funding to accelerate growth in the education sector. The astute diplomat simply delved into practical global issues to address the question, he concluded that attracting funds is simple; one needs to identify a specific need and design a solution-based model, he claims that the foreign multinationals are always willing to give grants.

Other dignitaries present at the event includes the Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, represented by his special adviser on eduation, the commissioner of education, Femi Agagu, the Vice chancellor of Olusegun Agagu University of science and technology, Okitipupa, Jegun of Ileoluji kingdom, Oba Julius Adetimehin, Lord Bishop of Ileoluji Anglican diocese, chief Imam of Ileoluji, among others.

THE RENT VEIL: A Sermon review

The Rent Veil, a sermon delivered by Charles Spurgeon provides a deep theological exploration of the tearing of the veil in the temple at the moment of Christ’s death (Matthew 27:51). Spurgeon explains that this event holds profound meaning for Christianity, signifying the removal of the separation between God and humanity, ushering in a new era of accessibility to God through Christ. The sermon dives into the Old Testament practice of temple worship, where a thick veil separated the Holy of Holies—God’s earthly dwelling place—from the rest of the temple, allowing only the high priest to enter once a year. The tearing of the veil, according to Spurgeon, marks the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies and the end of the sacrificial system. Spurgeon points out that the death of Jesus is a marvel of time and eternity. Using the imagery of Aaron's rod turned serpent which swallowed the magicians', he described this miracle as one which outshines every other power mira...

PUTTING OUT A FLEECE: WHEN DOES IT GO TOO FAR?

Image Credit: In Touch Ministries  Ever been at a crossroads, at the juncture of making some life-defining decisions, and found yourself asking, “God, give me a sign!” Perhaps it was for a new job, a relationship, a move across the country, or a chance to start over. You think, “Should I make this move?” So, just like Gideon, you asked for a sign, and waited for confirmation. But when does asking God for a sign become less about faith and more about avoidance? And are we sometimes, in our quest for reassurance, pushing God’s patience? The story of Gideon is a classic example of a man seeking reassurance and confirmation from God about a big national assignment. Israel, in Gideon’s time, had distanced themselves from God. They were spiritually starved, oppressed by the Midianites, and had lost every thread of intimacy with God. When the Angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he was, understandably, hesitant to believe what he was hearing. So, he “put out a fleece,” asking for a mirac...

BROKEN CISTERNS

Image: Urgentmission.org " For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water " - Jeremiah 2:13 (KJV) Central to human desire is the quest for fulfillment and satisfaction. A void exists in every heart, yearning to be filled daily. Every human pursuit aims to achieve this ultimate feat, but this relentless quest for stability and respite also harbors dangers. In seeking breakthroughs by any means, some have derailed their destinies and futures, while others have incurred immense sorrow. The devil holds millions of ignorant souls captive, pledged to him in exchange for worldly goods. As the Bible asks, "What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul? What will he give in exchange for eternity?" (Mark 8:36-37) In our anchor text, Israel has once again forsaken the Lord, as is their custom. They quickly forget the One who...
