Females are already taking the lead positions in the Nigerian banking sector. Six banks in the country now have females as their CEO, the banks include Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB) headed by Miraim Olusanya, First city monument Bank (FCMB) headed by Yemisi Edun, Fidelity Bank headed by Nneka Onyeali Nkpe, Citibank headed by Ireti Samuel Ogbu, SunTrust Bank headed by Halima Buba and the Unity Bank headed by Tomi Somefun.
On Wednesday, July 14 2021, Guaranty Trust (GT) Bank announced the appointment of Miriam Olusanya as its Managing Director/CEO, the first woman to occupy the position since the bank was established in 1990.
With the announcement, GT Bank joined the list of commercial banks in Nigeria who have women in charge of affairs. Earlier this week, First City Monument Bank (FCMB) announced Yemisi Edun as its MD/CEO. On the 1st of January 2021, Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe assumed office as the MD/CEO of Fidelity Bank Plc.
This had again proved wrong the conception that women can only function in a subordinate position but now that we have women at the helms of affairs of six major Banks in Nigeria, a cue from how they rose to the top would be a lot beneficial.
